Our Year 10 students recently took part in the ‘Opening Doors to Opportunities’ programme with KPMG,  in partnership with The Talent Foundry. Students experienced life in a professional office environment and worked with KPMG employees on a range of business-style tasks and challenges. 

The programme encouraged students to develop key employability skills and learn about a range of career pathways. The experience gave students a valuable insight into the modern world of work and helped raise aspirations for their future career choices. We would like to thank KPMG for providing an engaging opportunity for our students.

Our Year 10 Drama cohort went on a trip to watch Noughts and Crosses by Pilot Theatre. The aim was to analyse the play for the third component of their exam.

After the play our students had the opportunity to ask questions to the actors and gain an understanding of what life is like on the road and how actors embody characters effectively. This was a great chance to dissect the play and cultivate ideas.

Recently, the Year 10 geographers went to The Carpenter’s Estate and East Village in Stratford to conduct their human fieldwork investigation into the impacts of the 2012 Olympic regeneration.

Luel in Year 10 said:

“My GCSE geography trip to Stratford was a really interesting experience because it allowed us to see everything we had been learning about in the classroom which came to life. I was able to explore the area myself and understand how geography affects people’s everyday lives. Walking round Stratford helped me notice all the modern buildings, transport links and how the environment has changed over time. One of the most useful parts of our fieldwork was doing the questionnaires where we spoke to members of the public about the regeneration. This helped us get an understanding of how local people feel about the changes in Stratford. The trip also helped me socialise with my classmates more and we got to work together on tasks and discuss ideas, making the experience both enjoyable and educational at the same time.” 

The Year 10 geographers are now analysing the results that they collected from their questionnaires, environmental quality surveys, field sketches and pedestrian counts to help draw conclusions.

Year 10 Food Preparation and Nutrition students recently stepped out of the classroom to visit Neal’s Yard Dairy in Bermondsey. The hands-on trip offered students a behind-the-scenes look at artisan cheesemaking, traditional maturing processes, and the importance of sustainable, local food sourcing.

Our students were guided through the temperature-controlled maturing arches, where they learned exactly how environmental factors like humidity and temperature influence the flavour profiles and rinds of raw-milk cheeses. Highlights of the visit included: a cheese tasting and a factory tour.

Connecting theory to practice back at school, the students are diving into the science of nutrition, food provenance, and sensory evaluation.

“Our school trip to see Six was an experience that most of the Year 10 students will remember as one of the highlights of our year group.“

 “From the beginning of the evening, the energy felt vibrant and full of life, and when we finally sat down, none of us expected the atmosphere to only grow stronger as every single performance became more powerful , engaging and emotional as the show continued.”

Last Thursday, at Breakfast Club, our Year 11s came in early to eat and revise before their maths exam. Their teachers joined them to give last minute help, support and reassurance.

It was a wonderfully focused atmosphere, with other students being both supportive and impressed by the dedication and hard work on show. You could hear them shouting ‘good luck’ to the Year 11s as they left Breakfast Club.

Breakfast Club would like to wish ‘good luck’ to all those taking exams.

Last week Maryam, our Year 12 Head Girl, planned and delivered a fantastic assembly on mental health for Mental Health Awareness Week. She spoke with confidence and authenticity and all Year 9s and staff were blown away by her insight.

“The assembly was about taking the time to reflect on your emotions and feelings whenever and as often as possible to be able to identify what makes your mood change and how to be able to manage them. 

A piece of advice I shared was to celebrate the big little wins which means celebrating the small milestones or wins, for example, getting to school on time or doing a bit of revision when you didn’t want to at all or reaching out to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while.” – Maryam

Year 12 and 13 English Literature Students went to see a new production of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House to support their study of the text at A-Level. Year 13 students appreciated a modern take on this classic 19th century feminist text and enjoyed discussing how it was adapted for a new audience, and how these adaptations challenged their own interpretations of the original.

Year 12 students, who have not yet studied this text, have cemented a foundation for their study of it next year. They also enjoyed thinking about the key themes evoked in the play and were certainly curious about how they might ‘walk this play back’ to the 19th century when it was originally written and performed.

sUCCESS IN SPORTS

As the sports seasons come to a close, we have two students we wish to shine the spotlight on.

Ellie has recently received a two-year contract from Charlton Athletic and will join their under 21 squad from June. She will be balancing this with A-levels and we can’t wait to see what she achieves.

Georgia, in Year 10, has qualified for the Aquatic British national championships, in July, in her favourite race (breaststroke). This is exclusively for the fastest 24 swimmers in the country for her age group, so it is a great achievement.
