The Year 12 Politics class visited the Houses of Parliament. We enjoyed a tour of both chambers and the hallway in which I gained deep insight into the history of Parliament and the day-to-day goings on. During the day, I learnt about parliamentary ping-pong (the process by which a Bill is reviewed and scrutinised by being between the House of Lords and the House of Commons) and how the most recent Bill going back and forth in its review is the Employment Rights Bill. Expanding on this, I also learnt about Royal Ascent – where the Monarch signs off on laws.

My favourite part of the day was the workshop where we had a mini election, in which four students stood as candidates, coming up with mock slogans, policies and party names.

We ended the day with a group discussions with Jeremy Corbyn! He spoke about his new party and current issues, like Human Rights – the class thoroughly enjoyed this. Overall, I am overwhelmed by the amount of links to my classwork I saw in the tour of Parliament and in Corbyn’s speech as currently we are learning about the ins and outs of the European Convention of Human Rights. Honestly, Politics is fascinating to me and attending the Houses of Parliament has solidified my desire to work in politics.

Year 12 historians have been studying the impacts of the Great Depression on American society. To bring the subject to life, Laura baked a ‘water pie’, a depression-era recipe that uses basic ingredients including flour, butter and – of course – water.

“We’ve been learning about what life was like for Americans during The Great Depression in History, and the pie has given us a taste of their struggles because it was a bit of a struggle to eat. It was actually even more beige and dense than you would expect.”

We love seeing students going above and beyond to bring their subject content to life, particularly in the forms of food!

Black History Month: Spotlight on Sports

This October, the PE Department has been celebrating Black History Month. As part of their homework, pupils researched and created posters or biographies about Black women in sport who have inspired change, achieved success, or are shaping the future.

From world-famous legends to rising young stars, all of the projects have been brought together to create a fantastic wall display in the PE corridor, which now inspires everyone who walks through.

Students shared their thoughts:

• “I loved writing about Serena Williams—she never gives up and that really inspired me.”
• “The wall display looks so colourful and powerful. It makes me proud.”
• “I found out about Simone Biles and how she changed gymnastics—she’s amazing.”
• “I liked researching Black women in sport because I discovered athletes I had never heard of before.”

We are proud to honour the past, present, and future of Black women in sport through this project. Most of all, we are proud of our students, whose creativity, energy, and passion for learning make celebrations like this so special.

You may also notice that we have added an ‘Extra Contribution’ option for each year group. These optional donations help make trips more accessible for all students by supporting families from lower-income backgrounds. Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference.

Gardening Club: A bunch of Green fingers

This week, Gardening Club has continued enjoying the fruits of their labour – namely, grapes! Along with weeding and clearing the flowerbeds, students picked and tasted our school-grown bunches, which students described as “sweet and juicy”.

Students have continued to demonstrate excellent commitment to learning, through high attendance and merit achievements. We’re impressed that this week over 80 students have received merit awards!
